The following is a summary of recent action that has taken place on tobacco-related bills pending in state legislatures:
California: Assembly Bill 2770, which, as amended, requires a report on the adequacy of funding of the Cigarette and Tobacco Control Act, passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee on May 18, 2016. Senate Bill 977, which prohibits use of a tobacco product, including e-cigarettes, within 250 feet of a youth sports event and allows local jurisdictions to adopt stricter measures, passed the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 16, 2016.
New Jersey: Senate Bill 298, which prohibits the sale of flavored electronic smoking devices, was amended and passed by the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee on May 16, 2016. Senate Bill 2135, which prohibits the sale of tobacco products and electronic smoking devices at pharmacies, reported favorably from the Senate Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee on May 16, 2016.
p>New York: Assembly Bill 2890, which prohibits the sale at retail of candy or other food products packaged or shaped to emulate or resemble tobacco products, is on the agenda of the Consumer Affairs and Protection Committee for May 23, 2106.
Oklahoma: House Bill 3210, which increases the tax on cigarettes by $1.50 per pack, passed the Joint Appropriations and Budget Committee on May 17th and failed to pass the House by a vote of 59-40 on May 18th. However, after initially failing to pass the House, a notice to reconsider the vote was served by Representative Cox.
Vermont: House Bill 171, which prohibits the use of electronic cigarettes in the same places where the use of lighted tobacco products is banned and prohibits electronic cigarette displays on store counters, was enacted on May 19, 2016.
